Operation Respect Ukraine

logo.pngWhile in Peace Corps Founder of Peacebuilding Connections Bob Schlehuber created Operation Respect Ukraine (OR Ukraine), a collective effort between the US Peace Corps, Peace Corps volunteers, Ukrainian NGO's Alternative-V and the YMCA of Ukraine, the US Embassy, Operation Respect, and local community members and teachers both in the US and Ukraine.  The initiative worked to establish a training of trainers model for the distribution and replication of US based NGO Operation Respect's social and emotional character development curriculum titled "Don't Laugh at Me (DLAM)." Operation Respect was created by Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary with the mission of creating safe, caring, and compassionate environments for youth.

Peter-at-Kiev-School-150x150.jpgOn December 15, 2010 Peter Yarrow of the influential American folk group Peter, Paul and Mary arrived in Ukraine to spur excitement for the new Operation Respect Ukraine program.  Peter held concerts for Peace Corps volunteers, Ukrainians in Kyiv and several smaller concerts in the villages of Ukraine.  At the same time Mark Weiss, education director of Operation Respect, held a four day work shop for Peace Corps volunteers and Ukrainian educators.  Through this four day work shop individuals were certified as Professional OR Ukraine trainers.

All lesson plans for OR Ukraine available in Ukrainian language and songs have been translated and recorded by Ukrainian musician Maria Burmaka. Since the creation of the program over 3,000 educators have been instructed by OR Ukraine Professional trainers throughout the country on how to use the DLAM curriculum within their schools and communities at no costs.
